Course Details

This Patient Manual Handling Training Course provides nurses & care staff  the skills to undertake the safe handling of patients which will enable them to avoid lifting and keep both the patient safe as well as themselves.

To comply with current Health and Safety legislation, SHW at Work (General App) Regulations 2007, Part 2 Workplace and Work Equipment, Chapter 4 “Manual Handling of Loads” and Amendment Regulations 2007.
In organisations today we need to look after the health safety and wellbeing of their people. Those involved in the Manual Handling of people is a key part of that responsibility.

Carers engaged in Patient Manual Handling must be given training in safe manual handling techniques. This manual handling training course will show your staff how to carry out manual handling tasks correctly, avoid lifting and therefore avoid back injuries. By training your staff how to conduct manual handling safely you are complying with your legal requirements. Back injuries caused by incorrect manual handling techniques are one of the most frequent causes of workers compensation claims. This course is Fetac Accredited and complies with HSA requirements.

Patient Manual Handling Course - Objectives

The patient manual handling training course is designed to develop the students knowledge and application of manual handling and patient lifting and enable them upon completion of the course to adopt best practice manual handling techniques while carrying out their duties. This course will ensure that participants have knowledge of the statutory regulations and the practical skills in safe moving and handling techniques.

Method of Delivery

The course will utilise both theory and practical learning which will encourage student participation and feedback and ensure strong knowledge of practical skills.

Assessing the Task, Individual, Load and Environment

Practical Skills

Moving independent patients

Moving patients requiring aid

Moving dependent patients

How to deal with the fallen/falling patient

Use of Sliding sheets

Patient Moving Aids

Mechanical Aids including wheelchair Push & Pull

Demonstration in the use of a  Hoist

Who should attend

All staff engaged in patient manual handling during their working day

Pre-course requirements: None

Maximum number of participants: 12


There will be both a short theory and practical demonstration required in order to successfully complete the patient manual handling course and receive certification.


A certificate of attendance is awarded by Excel Safety Services and is fully recognised by the HSA (Health & Safety Authority).
